If You Can Make Toast, You Can Make Your Own Homemade Skincare Products

Calendula nappy balm

What better balm to make yourself than a nappy balm. You will know exactly what has gone in it and feel confident using it on your precious wee baby’s sensitive skin. Calendula is a skin-soothing and healing herbaceous flower, and is one of the best herbs for treating skin problems like burns, scalds, cuts, abrasions and infections because of its antiseptic and healing qualities. This makes it ideal for use in the nappy area, or any dry or irritated skin.

(Makes 100g)

  • 40g calendula infused oil
  • 20g organic almond oil
  • 20g wild shea butter
  • 10g organic coconut oil
  • 10g beeswax
  • few drops German chamomile essential oil

Melt in a pot, add the essential oil, pour into a jar. Leave to set.

Shea butter balm

Shea butter is fantastic for the skin, known for its soothing and moisturizing properties – something our dry winter skin will thank us for. It comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea (Karite) tree and that is naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F. It nourishes the skin with essential fatty acids and nutrients needed for collagen production – which keeps your skin supple and smooth.

(Makes 100g)

  • 50g shea butter or cocoa butter
  • 50g rosehip oil

Heat to melt the butter, add the oil, pour into a container and leave to set.

For a different texture, once the balm is set whip it with a beater until it doubles in volume. The result will be a balm that is lighter in colour and texture and easier to apply. Divine actually!
