Celebrating your child’s birthday with minimal waste

Use biodegradable tableware

If you decide to purchase some special items for the party table, select paper or wooden tableware so that you can pop these into your compost bin at the end of the party. The days of plastic tableware are long gone! Using your own crockery can work well too. A plain white plate with a paper napkin to suit your child’s party theme is a great idea that is also friendly on the wallet.

To party bag or not to party bag

Party bags can bring about a lot of waste depending on what they are filled with. Whether you give these out or not is down to personal preference. In our experience, there is often a lot of leftover birthday cake. Sending each child home with a slice of cake in place of a party bag is a great option. Another option is to have children craft items at the party that they can then take home (we have made mini crowns in the past for an Alice in Wonderland party theme which were also a take home item). This works well as it keeps children entertained too.

We hope you’ve enjoyed these tips for reducing waste at birthday parties. We’d love to hear what you do to minimise waste at your events.
