Creating Unique, Hand-Crafted Hoods for Both Adults and Children

The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?

I think as a creator, self-doubt can be a big challenge. Especially when I was in the early stages of development, I would often wonder if this was a good idea, but as time rolls on and my business has become more established, I have confidence in my products and ideas. I am also a performing musician so I’m not unfamiliar with these kinds of feelings as they are a part of creating, but have learnt to be aware of them and work with them, riding the waves of self-doubt, confidence and self-appreciation. I have learnt to trust my instincts.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

I’d say the pros are definitely that I’m at home, able to be with my child and this is something that I’m in control of. This is something that I have created and I enjoy it! Being my own boss, although I don’t see it that way which makes it all the better! This is something I am passionate about and fulfils a part of me. I like that all the ideas are mine and the process of learning, developing and succeeding.

On the other hand, obviously, it can be hard to start a small business. Covering initial costs can be tricky and then hoping that your product will be well received.

There will always be things that are difficult, but receiving positivity from happy customers and admiring people makes it very worthwhile.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I’m going to put a lot of focus and attention on pushing my new website. I would like to grow and expand to other stores throughout New Zealand and continue to play with more ideas. I don’t feel trapped by my decisions and am aware that I can move into any direction I would like my hood making to go, so am excited to see where my creativity leads me.
