From corporate career to a family business: selling unique toys, gifts, clothing and baby items

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

I love the flexibility and we open at 10.00am which is just fabulous when you have two non-sleeping babies like I do! Cons are that there is no regular, predictable pay cheque like having a job and it’s kind of like having another baby. You’ve invested your own time and money so that’s on the line. You are so happy on the good days but when it’s slow it’s your risk and can mean it’s a bit of a rollercoaster. But the ability to be with the kids in the morning and bring the youngest to work with me on quiet days is definitely a fabulous benefit. I’m also only 15 minutes from home so no long commutes to the city, plus I get to buy gorgeous toys and baby things. Basically, I get to shop for a living – now that’s the dream!

Hopes and dreams: What next?

We are trying to really get the online shop pumping; establishing a presence and some trust certainly takes a lot of time and dedication. I’d also like to expand our range into the baby wearing and possibly maternity/breastfeeding sphere. But really, we are lucky to be working to bring new exciting toys and gifts for our customers – it really is a lovely job. We have so many wonderful regulars and are on such a vibey street with a great community feel.
