The Gift of Looking Away

Our family has a vegetable garden that is a highlight of every summer.  My daughters and I venture out in a pack, almost every morning, with a big bowl to collect our harvest.  In the afternoons, we work together to wash and prepare the veggies for the evening’s dinner. It’s a simple pleasure, but one that binds us; the marvel of creating together. The satisfaction of self-reliance in our little community.

The zucchinis, in particular, delight me.  Despite my frequent visits to the garden, they still manage to catch me by surprise.  I was just there, less than 24 hours ago.  And yet, there they are, where they weren’t: Heavy zucchinis waiting quietly under giant leaves.

They grow when we’re not looking.
