The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?

Packaging is something we’re constantly trying to improve. Being an entirely online business means we ship everything and we need to do so safely and with as little environmental impact as possible. We’re always trying to find the latest home compostable packaging options and ways to reuse and recycle packaging. Last year we invested in a “cardboard munching” machine which means we can now munch up the boxes we receive and use it as packing in the parcels we ship to our customers.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

We’re a very small team: it’s Mum and I and two part-time employees (who also happen to be my two best friends), so we’ve got to be hyper-aware of every aspect of the business, from keeping on top of stock to maintaining the website to social media and product development. Sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day! At the same time it’s great to be fully in charge of the business and the direction we want to take it in, and because it’s just us we can implement positive changes very quickly.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

We’ve just launched a “makeup” section to our website with a range of mineral makeup ingredients, colours, equipment and recipes. This has been my project for the last several months, as I’ve been teaching myself from scratch how to make makeup and use new ingredients. It’s a wonderful creative outlet, at the same time as being a big learning curve for me as I figure out the hurdles around creating and launching new products. It’s very exciting. I’m still at the beginning of my makeup making journey and I really want to inspire and teach people how they can take control of what goes on their skin and look downright fabulous at the same time.
