Golden and Radiant: The Photography of Celia Galpin

Photography: Celia Galpin

By Hannah Schenker

If you have read the Autumn 2017 issue of The Natural Parent Magazine, you will have seen the beautiful photographs by Byron Bay-based Celia Galpin Photography. The images show a radiant, relaxed mama dressed in flowing white, or golden and glowing in a flower-filled milk bath.

Pregnancy is not always an easy time, in fact many women feel anything but radiant and glowing, and this is where Celia Galpin’s skill lies. Bringing out the beauty that lies within you. We spoke to her about her photography business which encompasses everything from maternity to fashion and events to lifestyle and weddings. One thing carries across every photoshoot though, and that is her eye for detail, simplicity and colour. Golden, hazy light and an endless summer.

The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
I’ve always had a passion for my photography, it was the only subject that I truly enjoyed at school.

I  used to take lots of photos for friends, but it wasn’t until  I became pregnant that I thought, if I’m going to follow my passion I need to do it now!

I was also working among some great talent in both the photography and film world, so having some extremely talented successful friends and being surrounded by them was very inspiring.

The Launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I needed to re-learn a lot. My background experience was film and I used to have a darkroom in every home I lived in. It was amazing to watch the magic of the photo develop right in front of you.

I started to study, did a few online courses to refresh and re-learn, and still continue to as there is always something new to learn.

I then started to work alongside some other photographers as their assistant, to gain the confidence that I needed to go out there on my own.

The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
For myself it was when I came 3rd place in a Canon Light Awards,

For the business it was when magazines started to show interest and put my images into print, and write about me.
