Living the Dream: Tropical Island Life With the Thomas Tribe

What are the pros and cons of your lifestyle?
Living remote, food is hard to source and expensive and being away from family and support is hard. On the flip side, the fact that food is expensive and not in abundance makes us more determined to eat as much as we can locally and off the land. Being away from family has been hard, but at the same time brought our own family unit so much closer together. Having no family support we decided to get an au pair to take the kids to the beach in the afternoons to interact and explore with them. It has been one of the best decisions we have made and gives me a break and the kids some fresh and fun interaction like they would get from a grandma or aunty.

We try to start most days at the beach, and believe that keeping our kids grounded, connected to the earth and using their imagination is one of the most essential parts of childhood.

Do you practice/did you practice any of the following with your children – breastfeeding, attachment parenting, baby-led weaning, co-sleeping, chemical-free living…If so, why? Do you think it benefited your children and yourselves?
We have followed a more “baby-led/natural” type parenting of our children and believe that babies know exactly what they need. Whether it be breastfeeding as often as they want, being close to you day and night or baby-led weaning. Our babies have all slept with us from the beginning until they are old enough and ready to go into their own beds, breastfeeding though the night as often as they like. We also believe breastfeeding is essential to our children’s health and have breastfed all our children to the age of 2. We try to start most days at the beach, and believe that keeping our kids grounded, connected to the earth and using their imagination is one of the most essential parts of childhood. We try to keep our household free of chemicals and do our cleaning with essential oils and vinegar, make our own toothpaste and use many natural products .We take a holistic approach to our children’s healthcare and use natural remedies as much as possible.
