Practical Products For New Mamas: New Mama Kit

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

This will sound a bit sad, but please hear me out: I’ve actually learned to LOWER my expectations! I represented Australia in Sailing at the Olympic Games in 2008, then worked as Senior Creative at Sydney’s largest independent advertising agency – so pressure and performance were second nature to me. But when your real life priority is to stay healthy and happy for your young family, I really had to teach myself to just take a breath, smile, and know that the sky would not fall in if I didn’t achieve all 33 things on my New Mama Kit to-do list that day.

I now set realistic expectations for New Mama Kit. Yes, I want it to be wildly successful, but my timeline for that is longer than, say, an investor might care for! I believe that my passion and perseverance make the business progress each week, without making myself ill or ignoring my toddler and bub. As my amazing mama clients will know, women become fantastic multitaskers once they become mothers, so I think combining both work and family life is birthed around the same time as your baby.

The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?

Not knowing a thing about online retailing was very daunting before I got started, so I guess this challenge was the one I had to be most prepared to tackle. Many, many YouTube videos, seminars, webinars and coffees with friends who own e-commerce stores paid off, and after about six months of educating myself I felt like I could talk the talk and make the business happen.

And of course the challenge of having pockets of time between toddler bed time and newborn midnight feeds is tricky. Gone are the days of eight uninterrupted hours of work time!

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

I find that being a mum is like running a marathon: much of the work we do to keep a happy family running is repetitive. So if you’re a creative person like me, #mumlife can suck the groovy, hipster fun-loving girl right out of you! So a big pro for me working on New Mama Kit and watching my creative input result in sales and great feedback, has been the little wins that are outside being a mum and that constant outlet for creativity.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

There are some really exciting things in store for New Mama Kit this year. We have chosen to support PANDA, an organisation that assists new parents who have peri- and post-natal anxiety and depression. Three dollars from each kit sold online goes to these guys, which is in line with New Mama Kit’s mission to make new mums feel better and heal faster after they give birth.

And I’ll be bringing out some new gift boxes, with even more gorgeous, natural, Australian- and NZ-sourced products that will make new mums feel great. So I’m excited for some new product partnerships and looking forward to seeing how they are received by gift-buyers shopping for that stand-out baby shower gift!
