Valentine’s Day potato heart stamps

By Charlotte Cretney

This craft may take you back to your childhood! I remember making these with my mum, so I thought it would only be fitting to bring them back for this Valentine’s Day!

I told Audrey that we were going to make a special Valentine’s Day card for her dad and she was so excited every step of the way. Copious amount of paint was used in the process as she stamped hearts everywhere – even in her hair!

I used to wonder what parents thought about getting all these handmade gifts from their kids and now I’m a mum I absolutely love receiving gifts, which are made with love.

You will need:

  • One large potato (with a washed outside)
  • One toothpick or something sharp
  • A sharp knife
  • A butter knife
  • Red child-safe washable paint
  • Paintbrush
  • White paper or card
  • Art smock for your toddler
  • Newspaper to protect your painting surface

Directions:

  1. Cut the end off your potato with your sharp knife, so you’re working with a flat surface. (For adults only)
  2. Use your toothpick to trace a heart shape on the top of your potato. When you have a rough outline press down hard so you are quite deep into the potato, continuing until you have a solid outline.
  3. Use your butter knife to completely cut the heart shape out from the potato, removing the excess potato, so all that remains on top is your heart shape.
  4. Your kids can take over from here! Let your kids paint the end of their stamps and get stamping.
  5. When your art is finished, leave it to dry then you can glue it onto card and give it as a Valentines Day gift!
