Founded by IBCLC Candice Purvis, Southeast Lactation Consulting provides education and support to assist women in their journey to motherhood. Using knowledge and experience gained from over 15 years in nursing and midwifery, their focus is on expanding the general education and finer details of human lactation. Candice aims to make the process as comfortable as possible for both mum and baby by offering consultations in the home. This allows her to observe the natural feeding process and work with mums to provide a breastfeeding plan that suits the family. Here she talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about the inspiration behind Southeast Lactation Consulting, how she balances work and family, and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
Working as a midwife and MCH nurse helping new mums on their breastfeeding journey, I realised there is a huge gap in all the confusing information they are given. I decided to educate myself further by studying and sitting the IBCLE exam. Becoming an IBCLC was difficult, but I am glad that I managed to achieve this. I have been a health professional for over 15 years and an IBCLC for 5 years.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
While I was on maternity leave with my son, I decided to set up a private practice and started seeing clients in their homes with breastfeeding concerns. Since then, I have been able to help over 500 families. I have recently started selling items that I believe in and are helpful tools for some women on their breastfeeding journey.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
It is lovely when someone comes up to you in the community and says “thank you, my 2-year-old is still breastfeeding because of your help”. These moments of gratitude make it all worthwhile.
