Effective & Sustainable Yoga Practices for Your Busy Life

Nicola Ferns Yoga

Nicola Ferns understands all too well how stressful it can be for mums juggling work and family life. Because life is so busy, you can struggle to find a spare few hours every week to spend on self-care, yet when you take small amounts of time for yourself regularly, you’ll feel calmer and more energised – better able to enjoy the life you’re working so hard to create. This is what inspired her to create a yoga membership that helps mums to implement fast, effective and enjoyable practices they can sustain. By creating an almost daily practice, it makes being mentally and emotionally present so much easier, allowing you to enjoy deeper bonds with your children whilst also building a successful and fulfilling career. Here Nicola talks about the passion behind Nicola Ferns Yoga and her business journey so far.

The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?

Most mums feel stressed because life is so busy and we don’t have a spare hour in the day to spend on self-care.

Despite being a qualified yoga teacher, I still found myself neglecting my own self-care when I went back to my (then) day job as a high school teacher after having my second child in 2018, because I didn’t have time to go to yoga classes several times a week.

Going to a class once a week/every other week is great to relax in the moment, but it’s not enough to make any real difference to your stress or energy levels throughout the rest of the week. So, I started a short, regular home yoga practice and learned how to use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to help me release intense feelings in the moment.

I created my Recharge membership to help other busy mums implement fast, effective, and enjoyable practices they can sustain. When you take small amounts of time for yourself regularly, you’ll feel calmer and more energised, and you’ll be able to enjoy the life you’re working so hard to create.

The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?

I wanted to be sure my methods would work, so I reached out to my small audience on social media and asked if anyone would like to become a Founding Member of my Recharge membership.

15 amazing women said yes and over the course of a year, I helped them implement the same strategies I’d used on myself, got their feedback, tweaked a few things, and finally created my 5-step membership journey, which would enable other mums to feel calm and energised in the quickest and most sustainable way for their busy lives, by giving them the freedom to go at their own pace and create a self-care practice that’s truly unique and perfectly suited to them.

The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?

My biggest breakthrough was realising I wanted to serve mums who want to find a balance between their career and family life – women who’ve worked hard to build their careers/businesses and are driven to make an impact but also want to be physically, mentally and emotionally present at home.

When I stopped trying to teach yoga to everyone and decided to focus on women who I could relate to, it lit a fire under me because I understand the problems these women face every day and I truly want to help them maintain the energy and inner calm they need to achieve their goals.

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

By walking my talk! I get up at 6am at least 5 days a week and do my 30-minute yoga practice. And I use EFT and pranayama (breathing) practices, when necessary, throughout the day to help me maintain a sense of balance.
