Probiotic Cleaning Products: The Sustainable Way to Wipe Out Bacteria

BioKing was born from a desire to create a sustainable cleaning product that can be used with confidence. They are committed to creating products that make it easy for businesses and individuals to make a meaningful change in their everyday lives. Their probiotic cleaners will wipe out bacteria on any surface and leave them cleaner than chemical cleaning options, but, as they are sourced from nature, they are not harmful to humans, and they won’t damage our environment like chemical cleaners do. Here, Co-Founder Mariska Murgatroyd talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about her passion for human health and the environment and the inspiration behind BioKing, the pros and cons of running your own business, and their hopes and dreams for the future.

The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?

My background is food development and the past five years has been focused on the benefits of probiotics in food supplements. Understanding all the amazing benefits of probiotics, the necessity for our immune system, I naturally migrated towards other applications. Every parent can relate to cleaning products; we use them daily and our children are exposed to them. Having seen the detrimental impact on human health and the environment, we wanted to tackle the cleaning industry.

There is a big desire for safer cleaning products that can actually clean. We wanted to develop solutions that would make it easier for the commercial industries and home users to make a change.

The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?

BioKing was born during the first COVID lockdown. It was a time that we could focus on what it is we wanted to achieve and to really get our thoughts on paper. We started in our kitchen at home: mixing, cleaning, smelling and of course including our extended family. Everyone had to try the samples and give us constructive criticism.

The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?

Being in lockdown, we had to think outside the box. When the world stopped, we literally started. We knew commercial cleaning companies still had to clean, being essential workers. Our first mission was to get one on board, really put our products to the test, and then use that as a platform. Having a well-known commercial cleaning company taking our products onboard and across New Zealand was truly our first breakthrough. Not only were we instantly replacing harsh chemicals, but we were giving cleaners safer products to use on a daily basis.

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

This is something we still have not mastered. Being a husband-and-wife team that has worked together for 7 years, our main pillow talk is work. This is mainly because our business is our passion and naturally that is what we want to share as soon as we get the kids down. We have implemented boundaries, where we consciously decide to spend time together without phones or any work discussions. As the business goes through various stages and pressures, this balance changes. Let’s just say it is a work in progress.
