Issue 39

I’m going through a bit of a dilemma. I don’t know about you, but I’m faced with the daunting task of explaining the current political climate to my 14-year-old daughter without frightening her. It’s not easy, and that’s putting it mildly – the protests, the pandemic, the culture wars, even the toughest character would find it an insurmountable task… If you turn to page 12, Rebecca English will guide you through the process of talking to your kids during times of turmoil. She writes about how we can best get through this time of great change in the most connected and effective way possible. In her words, “Some people think we can’t be honest with children because they’re too immature, but I don’t think that is true.” There is plenty more in the way of parenting support, including advice on raising self-secure, confident, self-loving kids in the wonderful article by Carlo Chincarino on page 30. Carlo says, “In a world where we are constantly told of our limitations, children need a place where they can show off their potential. The events of 2020 so far have amplified the need for kids to be told that who they are is great, that they are capable of good, that their emotions are right, that their feelings are normal and that their uniqueness is actually a good thing.” So, keep cosy mamas, and keep safe and well.
