Real Healthy Me founder Olivia Currie believes that everyone is entitled to good health, and that you should always be in your prime, regardless of age. Real Healthy Me is a team of a medical doctor, dietitian, pharmacist and health coaches, providing one-on-one consultations and health programmes to help you improve your health, naturally. Here she talks about the inspiration behind the business and her hopes for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
When I was 15, I wanted to pursue a career in something that fulfilled my three loves: people, food and science. Interestingly, it made sense to me then to pursue a career in medicine! It was when I became a mother that I realised the full potential of the human body. Our bodies crave homeostasis and equilibrium, constantly accommodating the daily stresses we impose upon them and recalibrating its functioning to achieve optimal performance.
My own health journey started with vanity – I wanted to lose my baby weight. A simple pursuit became an eye-opening experience and has changed the way I practise medicine. Not only have I lost the baby weight but I have also regained youth and am blessed with even-tempered children. This new-found knowledge has enabled me to influence change in the lives of patients and clients I see in practice. However, I found the current healthcare model limiting as its business model does not incentivise time to understand the needs of each individual.
With much deliberation, planning, and networking, Real Healthy Me was born. Our model of care is a multi-disciplinary one and we use what people do every day as medicine – eating, sleeping, moving, thinking, and connecting with others. This modality is encompassed in an emerging specialty called “Lifestyle Medicine“.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
After achieving my own results, I decided to see if my new-found knowledge was transferable to the patients I see in Family Medicine (General Practice). I began assessing the diet and lifestyle of almost every other patient that I saw and helped them identify something to change in their lives that could provide them with the biggest improvement and with the least effort. Within 9 months, I saw type 2 diabetes reversed, improved anxiety and depression, people coming off medications, people wanting to come off WINZ to seek work and even one staying off IV drug use!
Now that Real Healthy Me has been operating since the initial COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, this clinic has allowed me to help people achieve results in just 3 months, whatever their health goals are. The best is that this is only the beginning.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
I think this is a two-layered question for me!
For me in Family Medicine, I work in the best of both worlds – within the realm of health and technological breakthroughs, and then with the person in front of me during a medical consultation. Whilst we have medicines and sciences to help control diseases, what controls the quality of a person’s life remains with the person. As a result, the biggest innovation and breakthrough for me is going back to the foundations and basics of the human body. For example, whilst the best chefs in the world can create wonderful plates of food with molecular gastronomy, the best tasting plate of food usually still comes from our grandmother’s kitchen.
Then, ascertaining this in my core beliefs, I gathered the courage to come out of the conventional healthcare model to do this. This is my other breakthrough.
