Like other parents of children with sensitive skin, Caroline Taurusta was frustrated that her daughter’s sleep was being disrupted, leading to regular wake-ups and restless nights. Once she established that her pyjamas might be the cause of some of her discomfort, she set out to find sleepwear that was kinder to her skin and would allow them all to have a better night’s sleep. This inspired her to start Petit Bear, providing families with high quality, bamboo pyjamas for their little ones that are naturally hypoallergenic and breathable, and gentle on sensitive skin. Their gorgeous, playful designs can be enjoyed by the whole family too. Here Caroline speaks to The Natural Parent Magazine about the passion behind Petit Bear and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
At an early age, my daughter’s sleep was always interrupted due to her sensitive skin condition. I tried so many different options to make things more comfortable for her, but then one day I realised that perhaps it was her pyjamas that were part of the problem. I needed to find her some sleepwear that was kind to her skin so she could have a better night’s sleep – so it is my daughter who has really inspired me to start this pyjama business.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I did some research and discovered that bamboo fabric is perfect for a baby’s sensitive skin. However, it was difficult to find any high quality and reasonably priced bamboo sleepwear. The options available were lower in quality or very expensive and that is how I came up with Petit Bear.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
I came up with the idea to start Petit Bear to provide high quality bamboo pyjamas that wouldn’t irritate your baby’s sensitive skin. Our product also includes all of the practical features for busy parents such as a two-way zip for easy nappy changes, fold-over mittens to prevent your little ones from scratching, and fold-over foot cuffs for extra warmth. We also offer family matching pyjamas.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
As a mum of a toddler, working full time in a corporate job and running a small business is not always easy. However, I am very lucky to have such incredible support from my family, especially my husband.
Setting priorities is very important to keep the work and family balance. For example, setting aside time to read books or play with my daughter each night after work. I also like to plan and do things in advance, such as doing weekly meal prep for the family on the weekend.
The other important thing to balance work and family life is to have couple time with my husband, such as going for a coffee or even just going for a walk together. We are so lucky to have our parents’ and siblings’ support to look after our daughter while we have our couple time.
