Mumma Bear: Supporting Families with Love, Innovation and Care

Mumma Bear

Mumma Bear is an Australian family-owned brand dedicated to supporting parents with affordable, high-quality and sustainable essentials from pregnancy through to toddlerhood. Founded by mum-of-two Bianca Freedman during the challenges of early motherhood and the COVID-19 pandemic, Mumma Bear offers practical, eco-friendly products like cloth nappies, reusable breast pads, self-care items, and TGA-approved postpartum supports. With a strong focus on community, customer care, and environmental responsibility, Mumma Bear helps families navigate parenthood with confidence, comfort and love. Here Bianca talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about how she started out in business, Mumma Bear‘s involvement in the community, balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and her vision for the future.

From Struggles to Solutions: How Mumma Bear Began

When Bianca became a first-time mum during the first wave of COVID-19 in 2020, she faced the daunting task of preparing for life with her new baby. With in-person shopping limited and a seemingly endless stream of online reviews, comparisons, and shipping delays, even the simplest purchase became overwhelming. Add to that the financial challenges of parental leave, and the balance between quality, affordability, and accessibility became painfully clear.

At 5 months old, Bianca’s little one developed sensitivities to disposable nappies, and their waste filled nearly half the family’s wheelie bin each week. Determined to find a more sustainable and gentle solution, she discovered cloth nappies. But navigating the world of cloth nappies for the first time revealed its own challenges: finding products that balanced quality, cost, and sustainability. Realising many other parents faced similar struggles, Bianca set out to create Mumma Bear-a brand dedicated to providing affordable, high-quality products that Australian families could rely on.

The Launch: A Family-Centered Start

In April 2021, Mumma Bear was born with a small but thoughtfully curated range of essentials: cloth nappies, reusable breast pads, wet bags, and organic muslin swaddles. Every product was rigorously tested and used every day by Bianca’s own family, ensuring it met the real-life needs of parents and babies. Over time, as Bianca’s family grew, so did the Mumma Bear range. Today, the brand supports families from pregnancy to toddlerhood with products designed to make life easier and more sustainable.

From the start, sustainability was at the heart of Mumma Bear’s mission. The brand transitioned from single-use plastic packaging to eco-friendly options that are compostable, biodegradable, reusable, or recyclable. This commitment reflects Bianca’s dedication to helping families while protecting the planet.

Listening, Learning and Innovating

One of Mumma Bear’s greatest cornerstones is its customer-first approach. Bianca takes the time to listen to her customers, understand their challenges, and create products that make a difference. This thoughtful feedback loop led to the creation of Mumma Bear’s self-care range, which supports new mums who often overlook their own needs.

One of the most popular products in the range is the TGA-approved pregnancy and postpartum belly band. Designed for use during pregnancy, post-surgery, and postpartum recovery, it’s celebrated for its comfort, affordability, and eligibility for medical rebates. This product perfectly embodies Mumma Bear’s mission to support families with high-quality, accessible solutions.

Getting Involved in the Community

Mumma Bear’s dedication to families extends beyond its store. Bianca and her team actively participate in Sydney’s children’s market scene, creating opportunities to connect directly with local families. These events allow them to share their story, build relationships, and learn more about the needs of the community.

Additionally, Mumma Bear is committed to giving back. The brand partners with The Women’s Cottage Domestic Violence Crisis Centre, donating care packages and funds to support women in crisis. These packages include essentials for both mums and babies, offering a small but meaningful source of comfort during incredibly challenging times. This community-driven approach is a core part of Mumma Bear’s values and mission.

Overcoming Challenges: Building a Trusted Brand

Launching a business during a global pandemic was no small feat. Bianca faced a crowded market and the challenge of standing out among competitors. But by building a brand rooted in trust, care, and education, Mumma Bear carved out a unique space. It became more than a store-it became a community where parents could find guidance, support, and products they could rely on.

Another hurdle was bridging the gap between affordability and fast delivery. Bianca understood the frustration of choosing between long shipping times from overseas or high-priced local options. Mumma Bear’s solution was simple but effective: provide affordable, high-quality products with quick delivery to Australian families. This approach has been a game-changer for many parents.
