Open-ended play involves a child playing with items that can have multiple uses and therefore infinite creative possibilities (think: sticks, box, wood shapes, paint, clay, mud etc), rather than a toy truck that has only one function.
Child-led play is about allowing a child to follow their own curiosity, their own instincts and ideas. You become a learning ally as they start exploring – available if they need support or assistance, waiting to be invited in.
You simply give them access to a wide variety of materials and some safe spaces to be, and let them go to it. A well-designed child’s space will make this kind of play much easier and accessible for a child.
If you are in New Zealand and would like to give your child the opportunity for this kind of early childhood education, New Shoots provides this sort of play. They base their curriculum on a mix of influences. Drawing on the principles of Pikler and RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) philosophies, Howard Gardiner’s Multiple Intelligences, New Shoots find the perfect balance between guiding children and letting them do things themselves, helping them grow into well-rounded, curious, resilient children, ready to take on the future.
At this stage they have centres in Auckland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, but more are on the way. They have programmes for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers and all are committed to this kind of learning. They also have supremely beautiful centres that are purpose-built putting children’s needs and aspirations first.
For young children, play really is a rich and fertile ground. They should be encouraged and supported to do as much of it as they feel compelled to. Through play, they will develop the skills they need to navigate the world – including innovation, creativity, empathy and individuality, setting them up for a bright future.
