So as he grew, that was the base, that was the roots, this incredible bond, this knowingness.
The other day I came into the kitchen to find my son had a kettle of boiling water that he was pouring on his noodles – I add here that this was the very first time he had done the water bit.
Before, he would have got the nest of noodles out of the packet, got the saucepan out of the cupboard, put the noodles in there, put the kettle on, but would then have got me to do the boiling water over them.
This time he just did it.
I came in and after I rode the split second of panic, I stopped and a calmness came over me and I KNEW he would not have done this if he hadn’t felt ready. So I stepped back silently and let him do it.
How did that moment of clarity and understanding come in? I am certain it was because of this bond, built on the foundations of love and breastfeeding. There is a knowingness and a level of trust that walks beside us both.
As he steps forward and up, I know that there will be more and more of these kinds of firsts and yes there will be the moment of panic, but there will also be a gentle message passed from him to me, that energetic exchange, that will show me the truth.
There is a reservoir of subtle wisdom connecting us both, that came from the years of breastfeeding, for I chose to continue to breastfeed long after the standard message that is put out as the normal.
Full-term breastfeeding was not my initial goal, but it came when I flowed with the journey.
So wherever you are on this path, know that it is the ultimate journey of love, connection and understanding, so in amongst the FACTS that we all know are of benefit to child and mother, there are these gifts that will always be there.
