Tips from a therapist: How to avoid tantrums & improve emotional connection with your child

When both parents and children are invested in listening to and understanding one another, a powerful sense of connection and trust can develop. This allows both parent and child to feel validated and accepted, even in the midst of disagreement or conflict.

Of course, this process of understanding and acceptance is not always easy. It requires both parents and children to be willing to put in the time and effort to communicate effectively and empathise with one another. For parents, it also requires a willingness to be vulnerable and open, even when it feels uncomfortable or like a ‘loss of authority’ in the parenting relationship.

When both parents and children are invested in listening to and understanding one another, a powerful sense of connection and trust can develop.

However, the benefits of this kind of connection are immeasurable. When children feel heard, understood, and accepted by their parents, they are more likely to develop a strong sense of self-esteem and self-worth. They are also more likely to feel confident in their ability to navigate the challenges of life, knowing that they have a safe and supportive home base to return to.

For parents, this kind of connection can help to alleviate the stress, anxiety and tantrums that often come with raising children.

Ultimately, the desire to be heard, understood, and accepted is a universal human need. When it comes to parenting, this need is just as important for children as it is for parents. By making a conscious effort to truly listen to and understand one another, parents and children can build a strong and resilient relationship that will serve them both well throughout their lives.
