There is no one right way to ‘do’ the fourth trimester, it really depends on your needs. Thinking about this in advance can help significantly with the transition into new motherhood.
The key elements to consider – to ensure you get the support you need – include:
Home: a nurturing environment is essential. Is it comfortable, safe and secure?
Tribe: who can you call on (partner, family, close friends, health professionals, etc.) and how can they support you? Physically, mentally and emotionally.
Nutrition: having good food on hand will ensure you meet your energy needs and nourish your body well. How do you plan to manage this?
Rest: this is an essential part of recovery and health maintenance for new mothers. But it can be difficult to make time for, particularly if there are other children to tend to, work pressures, or household duties that require attention. What measures can you put in place to allow you much needed time to rest and recuperate?
