Look After Your Skin in a Way That’s Safe for You & Your Little Ones

Heliocare AK Fluid is my go-to but I also love Heliocare Colour Gel Oil Free, which offers a lovely tint to even out skin on the days I don’t want (or have time to) wear makeup. Every day without fail, we always use Paediatrics Atopic Lotion on our daughter. I can be confident she is receiving the highest level of protection and maintaining skin health for years to come. I’m often applying this to my skin when I’m rushing out the door and use it as my body sun protection due to the larger size and easy spray bottle.

I keep this in my bag to have on hand to easily reapply. I love the small size and it suits our entire family

ANTIOXIDANTS & VITAMIN C

Antioxidants defend skin cells against damage from external stressors, think visible light, UV, air pollution and temperature. An accumulation of these can change cellular DNA and cause inflammation, which is ultimately responsible for accelerated aging and many skin disorders. Antioxidants are essential for protection, simultaneously decreasing inflammation and aiding cellular repair.

Two of the most widely used (for good reason) are Niacinamide and Vitamin C. Both ingredients work independently to block the transfer of pigment to skin cells, this process is essential in the treatment and prevention of pigmentation. Niacinamide in correct doses is hugely beneficial for barrier function, retaining water and regulating oil flow, making it a multi-beneficial ingredient for dry and problematic skin conditions.

Vitamin C is required for making quality collagen and elastin, essential for keeping the skin thick and strong. Pigmentation aside, if skin health preservation and age management are a concern, Vitamin C should be a non-negotiable ingredient in your daily skincare routine.

Heliocare also includes the antioxidant Fernblock, a naturally derived ingredient from the tropical fern Polypodium leucotomos. It has traditionally been used in South and Central America to treat inflammatory skin disorders, such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Developed by Heliocare in collaboration with Harvard Medical School, Fernblock has demonstrated improved function of skin’s natural defence mechanisms, reduction in UV-induced skin inflammation and decreased cellular DNA damage, reducing the risk of mutations.

Heliocare’s Pigment Solution Fluid and Heliocare 360 Capsules both include high levels of Vitamin C and Niacinamide to protect and improve stubborn hyperpigmentation

VITAMIN A

Vitamin A is the gold standard for repairing cell damage, maintaining skin health, and creating long-term visible changes. There can be negative side effects experienced when using the incorrect type and strengths, which is why it is important to seek guidance from a skin professional as to what is appropriate for your individual skin needs.

One of the most well-known forms of Vitamin A is Retinol, which is used widely due to its documented ability to repair cellular damage and normalise all major skin functions. However, Retinol is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in conjunction with acne medications. Always check the product recommendations and ask your healthcare provider before use.

Bryony’s Quick Tips for Skin Health during and after pregnancy

Melasma
  • Use hats and sunglasses to physically cover the forehead and eye area
  • Avoid heat where possible, as this can often exacerbate the condition (hot yoga, saunas, steam)
Ingredients
  • Salicylic (BHAS) and Retinol are to be avoided during pregnancy unless directed by your healthcare provider
  • Bauckicol and Beta Carotene are safe forms of Vitamin A to use from conception
  • Decrease the use of active ingredients such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), physical exfoliants and sometimes Vitamin C. Skin is often more reactive during pregnancy, even to things well-tolerated pre-pregnancy.

It’s safe to say that looking after your skin might not be right at the top of your to-do list after having a baby, or even during pregnancy, which can be an incredibly challenging time for some women. The best skincare routine is one that repairs and protects against skin damage, but that is doable for you. Start with a strong foundation and build from there. If you do nothing else, pop some Heliocare sunscreen on (you and baby) in the morning and keep a spare in your baby bag to apply during the day.

Looking after your skin can be a wonderful moment of self-care on a busy day for new mums. It’s fast and you know that you’re making a lasting difference.
