Inspired by her son and with a passion for the environment, Megan Sanders set out to create her own range of natural products for children. Wanting to bring fun and adventure to her products, whilst focusing on nature and sustainability, she launched Sailor Sailor, a fabulous range of New Zealand-made hair, bath and skin products for children. As well as being gentle on delicate skin, all their bottles are made from old plastic bottles and are recyclable, waving goodbye to parabens, PEGs, silicones, synth etic dyes, petrochemicals, dimethicone, synthetic parfum and harsh surfactants. Here, Megan talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about her business journey so far.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
My inspiration is Jimmy, the incredible human that I am lucky enough to have as my son. When he was around 10 months old I started searching for alternative products to the cheap, mass-produced, chemical-filled products that were available on the market. There were a few natural options around but they were not designed for the colourful adventurous minds of children.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I am the founder of Pineapple Heads and decided after three years of selling the business, that I still had a deep passion for bringing adventure and fun to children’s products, while keeping them natural, vegan, sustainable and made in New Zealand.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
My biggest breakthrough was getting out of my own way!
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I make it a fast rule when Jimmy is home from school that my laptop gets closed until his bedtime. If the team needs me, they can call. Otherwise you get ‘busy’ dealing with things that can actually wait a few hours.
