The Superhero Project: Photo series helps children with disabilities

Photography: Little Earthling

Renee Bergeron is a photographer based in Washington, USA. In 2010 Renee’s son Apollo was born – a seemingly healthy baby boy. But Apollo progressively became sicker and sicker, until he was eventually diagnosed at 18 months old with Double Aortic Arch – a congenital heart defect. The poor little guy underwent two major heart surgeries within a year, and suffered from many other complications, which you can read about here, including the need for a feeding tube.

One day Renee dressed Apollo up as a superhero and took a few pictures, which Apollo clearly enjoyed as he began posing unprompted. Of course he loved seeing the photographs of his superhero self, and so The Superhero Project was born. A way to boost the confidence of other children going through difficult times, or who have special needs and disabilities.

“I wanted to give these children a view of themselves as strong, beautiful individuals,” Bergeron told The Mighty.

We have huge respect for your good work Renee, and thank you for sharing these images with us.
