The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I’m not sure where to begin. We’ve had so many challenges, even before we launched – from unexpected additional charges, problems with getting the right magnesium shipped to the UK, leaking bottles and incorrect bottle tops, to the company making the wrong number of bottles, and more. Another challenge we face is that our competitors have a big budget for marketing and advertising, which we do not. For us, it has been a lot of affiliate support, working with other health professionals and attending wellness festivals to get our name out there.
We know it’s slow compared to businesses with more money for marketing, but our customers are loyal, and we know we have the best quality product, so we can compete with the big players!
For Better or Worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros are that your passion and creativity come to life because you are the one in charge and making the decisions. It’s also freeing to work on something that you love so much. There is no better feeling than seeing your dream on a shop shelf or hearing how your product has changed someone’s life! Plus, being your own boss is pretty awesome.
As for cons, it’s really hard to build a business, and we are still learning every single day.
One of the hardest things is managing finances and time. When it’s just the two of you, it’s difficult to share all the tasks, but with an open mind and setting small goals, it becomes manageable. My mentor told me, “Always put your entrepreneur’s hat on when working alone; imagine you have a big boss upstairs with deadlines to meet”. This mindset keeps you pushing on when you don’t feel like working.
Hopes and Dreams: What’s next?
We have many hopes and dreams, and our next big one is launching three lotions with magnesium in all of them. We have one for children of all ages to support sleep and stress, one for adults with a higher dose supporting overall health, and one specifically for people with joint or muscle issues, featuring anti-inflammatory ingredients like Arnica to support joints and muscles.
We hope to launch in larger retail stores, participate in yoga and wellness events, and soon be featured in more mum brunch spaces while working with more nutritional experts. Watch this space – Nature’s Mineral magnesium products will be everywhere soon, with our main aim being able to help as many people as possible.
Our overall future goal is to work with charities supporting children with neurodiversity needs. Magnesium is essential and often deficient in these children, and our spray and lotion offer a better solution than oral supplements. We hope to offer these at a big discount and work with families to support their children’s health.
