What All New Mums Need to Know About Recovery

4. Find a movement practice that you love

There are so many different types of movement you can do, more so now after the pandemic thanks to the explosion of online options from around the world. If you love it, you will make the time for it. Don’t be beholden to a modality or a teacher/trainer if it’s no longer lighting you up. We as instructors will understand and wish you well if you decide you want to do something else. For me, it’s bittersweet when my beautiful clients move on to other activities because I genuinely miss seeing them each week, but am so grateful to have had them in the studio for this monumental season of life.

5. Finally, your recovery will not be linear but little by little, progress will be made

Keep a diary or a photo album with movement-based outcomes recorded over time. You will be amazed at what you can achieve with just half an hour a week. The more time you can spare, the better (obviously). From personal experience though, just half an hour a week of dedicated movement with a goal in mind will eventually yield results. When you start sleeping more and your baby is less demanding of your time, you will be able to do more and the results will occur quicker.

Like with all things movement related in the postnatal period, please be gentle with yourself. Birthing and caring for a new baby is a huge task in and of itself. Acknowledge that before everything else. If you are ready to commit to some short workouts, the Post Natal Program may be just what you need. 8 weeks and all online, be guided during short workouts to gain strength in your core, glute, upper back and pelvic floor muscles as well as increase spinal mobility and overall flexibility. Also hear from experts about all things nutrition for both you and baby, kids’ sickness, postnatal naturopathy, pelvic floor and some information about that much-needed sleep.

Laura is the owner of Unwind Pilates Studio. She teaches Pilates to women from her studio in Newcastle and also via her online Post Natal Program and Pilates Membership. If you have any questions, feel free to head over to her website to find out more or send her an email.
