- Work with the elements – if the energy of a particular day or a particular moment feels off, see if thinking through the lens of the elements might help. This is an ayurvedic approach. For example, the quality of fire (pitta in ayurveda) can be balanced with a cool shower or water play. The quality of air (vata in ayurveda) can be balanced with grounding by playing in the sand or mud. The quality of water and earth (kapha in ayurveda) can be uplifted by flying a kite or dancing.
- Try essential oils – honestly, essential oils are such a lifeline for me on the parenting journey. I literally don’t know where I’d be without them. From citrus blends for uplifting and mood elevation, to peppermint for cooling, and lavender for grounding and rest, there is an oil for every need. Find out more about how I use oils here.
And a few bonus gentle reminders …
Where attention goes energy flows – it is always useful to try to compliment your kids on what they can do or have done right rather than nag or nit-pick. Often if you improve your tone and attitude, your kids will too, especially when frustration is mounting.
Take a sacred pause – my ayurveda teacher taught me the art of the sacred pause … just a moment to take a breath and recalibrate my vibe before reacting.
Create a calm zone in your home – what items could help you instantly reset? For me, a couple of essential oils, a warm cup of tea and some gentle music shift my mood in very little time. Gather a little collection of items that you know help you calm and reset and keep them in one place as a reminder to take moments for yourself throughout the day. Crystals, precious pictures, affirmation cards and inspiring quotes are other ideas to utilise here.
Prioritise staying in connection – one of my yoga teachers taught me that in a disagreement ‘you’re either right or you are free’, meaning that sometimes it is useful to let go of self-righteousness for the bigger picture of staying in connection with a loved one.
