Mum Betty Strachan is all about education in order to erase the stigma of breastfeeding, which is why she started making and selling these breastfeeding dolls through her Etsy page.
Strachan, mum to two boys, lives in Brisbane, Australia, and has been repainting dolls in the last few years. She turns the garish makeup, hair and clothing of the original dolls into more realistic characters, some complete with pregnant belly, partly shaved head, or coloured skin. How amazing is this? After all these years of just the one beauty ideal being put onto our kids, this is such a cool initiative.
“The decision to make a breastfeeding doll didn’t come consciously,” Strachan told The Huffington Post. “I’m a member of a mothers’ group that’s comprised of very lovely and supportive women. I remember one day, I was drawing the new face on a Barbie doll, and she just seemed to be the embodiment of the entire group. So I mimicked the positioning of a latched baby with an old figurine I had and called her the ‘Mamas Worldwide Barbie.'”
