“Full of sun, full of energy – freshly harvested, the vibrant orange calendula blossoms carry the sun within them.”
When it comes to cloth nappies, parents often have a lot of questions. How to use cloth nappies? Do cloth nappies have an impact on hip development? How tight should cloth nappies be? How many cloth nappies do I need? Do cloth nappies save money? And are they actually better for the baby?
Today’s cloth nappies are kind and gentle to your baby’s skin, real money savers and are great for the environment.
And the best thing is that they are more practical than you might think.
In this interview, Weleda midwife Christina answers some of the most commonly asked questions.
“How do modern cloth nappies work?”
- For beginners, all-in-one nappies and pocket nappies are suitable as they consist of a waterproof nappy and an absorbent insert. They are easy to use. If other helpers such as child carers or grandparents also change nappies these are your best options. With their velcro fasteners, they are just as convenient as disposable nappies. Make sure to provide a sealable, waterproof bag for used nappies, such as a wet bag.
“Are cloth nappies better for the environment?”
- Cloth nappies are definitely better for the environment. Consider how much waste is added to landfill just for one baby. Even worse, scientists estimate one disposable nappy takes 400 years to break down! Reusable cloth nappies on the other hand can be washed and used over years. They can even be used for several children in one family: adjustable shells and prefolds or all-in-two systems do not generate as much laundry and their size can be adjusted.
“Are there any health considerations?”
- Look for materials that are skin-friendly. Because each child reacts to material or moisture in a different way, there is no generic formula. Also compare the crotch width on nappy systems. Systems with a wide crotch allow the hips to develop.
“Are cloth nappies cheaper than disposables? And where is the best place to buy cloth nappies?”
- What is your budget? I recommend that you use second-hand quality nappies over new. Quality nappies can be passed on to many kids before they deteriorate, making it very budget and environmentally friendly. Look up your local online baby groups or ask friends to borrow. Great way to get cloth nappies on a budget.
“How many cloth nappies should I buy?”
- Consider how often you want to do the laundry and whether you use a dryer. This helps you to better calculate the number of nappies you need.
“What nappy cream to use on a newborn?”
Nappy Change Creams protect baby’s delicate bottom and are essential to use with nappies.
