If there is something she is told more than anything else when she receives photography bookings, it’s that people want candid photos over posed ones. This doesn’t just apply to family shoots but for weddings too – people are looking for something much more natural, more individual and unique.
As Kiwis, we have a super informal culture, and Julia believes this reflects something of that. She also thinks we’re looking for something more, especially living as we do in this crazy information, social media-obsessed age, where we see perfectly taken photos: perfectly posed, perfectly dressed, perfectly smiling photos of other families we don’t know – whether on Pinterest, Instagram or elsewhere online. Sure, some people look at those images and think they want that, but many more want something else: something that feels uniquely like their family, that’s a bit messier and rough around the edges, but it’s authentic. It’s those smeary, berry juice messed up faces that we love, and it makes it our family and our story.
