Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I was always someone who rolled up my sleeves and just made everything work, even when it took a huge toll on me. Since starting Little Pocket, I have set out some personal boundaries and this has been good for everyone!
I began to recognise in myself the need for self-care, even if it meant just asking my husband to cook tea that night, all the way through to a night or two away from my family, to spend quiet time alone, or with my parents.
The everyday balance remains tricky, but some of the things that help me are having lower expectations of myself and what I’ll achieve in a day, and lower expectations of my husband and kids, as well as the state of the house!! Easy meals to prepare and meal planning has helped a lot with the dreaded everyday question of “What’s for dinner?!” and “What’s in the fridge?!”. I’ve also employed a fortnightly cleaner who does the basics, so on the weekends this is off my mental to-do list and soothes the mental load a little.
I actually thought I’d never let myself hire help but at a low point, I was asked, “What’s stressing you out the most? Hire someone for it” – mine was keeping up with all the housework.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros of running my own business are:
- Meeting so many amazing business owners who I’d never had known otherwise
- Being in control of my own time management
- Setting my own goals and watching them come to life
As for cons:
- It’s always on your mind
- No one else is going to do it for you if a child is sick or life gives you lemons
- Having an endless to-do list
Hopes and dreams: What next?
My hope and dream is for people to recognise Little Pocket as a safe space to come to find life-giving information, travel ideas and wellness lifestyle inspiration; and for myself as the owner, to get regular feedback and testimonials about how this business has helped people in their own life, travel and overall story.
I also hope to continue expanding my partnerships with other like-minded business owners for mutual support, encouragement and a bit of fun!
