Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I found that when I was raising my family, it was important to establish clear and regular methods of communication. The second most important undertaking was to set boundaries and the third was to divide roles and responsibilities. However, now that my children are grown and my time is my own, I no longer have any excuses when I don’t meet a deadline or can’t finish my work because I have others to look after. I only have myself to blame. Now it’s all about me and self-managing me and that is a big job!
I have found a few tricks that help with finding my balance between work and play. I find the key to balancing Yin and Yang is being consistent and finding the flow in my self-installed systems. In doing so, that keeps me on track. Having a diary and keeping a tight schedule means I have to self-parent. I have strict rules and guidelines that I reward myself when I complete a challenging job or have a long day. However, I also self-discipline when I fail to meet responsibilities.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I have owned my own business for over 15 years. My learning curves and challenges in those years were mainly in relation to technology and financial management. My initial investment in my company went into employing those with skills I lacked. In spite of this, it has become clear to me that relying on others for things that I am unqualified to do is not a good idea. The idea is that one has to learn and know all aspects of their business, and it’s empowering to do so.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
I would have to say that my most cherished and biggest pro of having my own business is that I get to live my passion. However, I find that the disadvantage is that it requires a lot of self-motivation. While I enjoy having the freedom of choice and being the boss most of the time, that is also a con, as I am the only one to depend on and shoulder all the responsibilities. Flexible work-life balance is another big pro, but on the flip side, you don’t have a steady income.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
My dream is to grow the business globally. My hope is to revolutionise the way we consume. To provide additional sustainable products to our range and offer practical solutions for health, spirit and our planet.
