The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Investing the time in my business while looking after my baby has definitely been the biggest challenge. There have been quite a few late nights researching or editing photos. Taking little steps every day, even 5 minutes to create a little Instagram reel on the go or watch a tutorial, is how I keep pressing on when it’s difficult.
Secondly, overcoming my fear, the imposter syndrome, and increasing my confidence in myself has been so important. I keep putting myself out there, asking for feedback and critiques without taking offense and taking everything as a learning opportunity.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros are definitely the amazing flexibility and freedom to make my own decisions, as well as feeling like I have a direct impact on people and can make them happy. The cons: less security, decision paralysis, the costs of starting up (and I don’t discount that I have been fortunate to be able to cover these expenses).
Parenthood has taught me that everything worth doing is hard and not to give up.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I’m currently in the process of making my own home studio to expand my photography offerings. I would love to do more DIY, using handmade crafts, perhaps collaborating with other artists such as local florists or designers. I’m really driven to create a natural and bespoke experience for people that will be memorable, and to create true heirloom products for people in our digital age that can last generations
Maybe one day I could help inspire other mums to take the plunge and start a business or pass some of my learning on.
