Danielle Mahoney has always been passionate about naturally supporting the health of others. She came to the realisation that as women, we are great at looking after other people in our lives, but not so good at prioritising our own wellbeing. She was inspired to start Marama Healing, offering natural, holistic therapies to heal others through the struggles and cycles of their lives.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
As a young stay-at-home mum, I wanted to know all there was to know about naturally supporting the health of my family. I read as much as I could, learned aromatherapy and flower essence therapy, became attuned to Reiki and other gentle touch therapies, I found my passion in healing and I couldn’t stop… so I didn’t. I kept learning and experimenting with gentle touch techniques and plant potions. I experimented on myself and my children and was amazed at the healing response.
I was reminded that all women are inherently healers. Throughout time, we have had healing roles as mothers, midwives, caregivers, and wise women. The passion I discovered was nothing new or extraordinary, it was what women have always done: the understanding that through body, emotions, mind, and spirit, we can actively choose to heal ourselves and others.
And yet we women are generally not very good at doing for ourselves. We prioritise tending to the wellbeing of others while undervaluing our own needs. This is what inspired me to set up my own business, to offer healing to others in all phases and cycles of their lives. I am particularly interested in supporting women going through big life transitions such as pre- and post-natal periods to palliative care (and all in between!).
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I simply started doing what I love for family and friends and by word of mouth, people started asking for gentle touch healing sessions, or for plant potions such a flower essence or essential oil blends. A healing business offering energy healing and potions evolved and I now support people experiencing a variety of issues such as:
- grief or loss of a loved one
- times of transition (birth, death, illness, separation etc)
- relationship issues
- past trauma (unhealed emotions from past painful experiences)
- a personal quest for purpose or clarity
- struggles with mothering or expressing your needs/desires
- a desire to manifest and create the life you want to live
- a desire to be more present and grateful
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
I’m not sure there has been one particular big breakthrough; it has been more of a series of small sparks of clarity along the way. By intuitively taking note of pathways that become open to me, I take opportunities for professional development as they arise and when able. For example, last year I had the opportunity to train in care of the seriously ill and was invited to be part of a group seeking to bring gentle touch therapies into public health settings such as hospitals.
