The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Staff coming and going has been a challenge. I’ve had to learn that this isn’t a forever job for some people.
I need to always be hiring and training so that House Mum can grow, and also have support within the team when people do move on to other careers.
Training has also been a challenge as I put a lot of pressure on myself to make sure our service is always of high quality. Making sure the training is streamlined and always up to date is important in ensuring that our quality standards are always achieved.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
There are no set hours. I do my best to keep work-life balance as I promote this for my team, however it doesn’t always work out that way. When my team needs me, I do my best to be there for them. My brain is always thinking about the business as I have big goals for the future.
The benefits far outweigh the negatives. I love the flexibility I have running my own business. If my kids are sick or I have an appointment, I don’t need to ask permission to take a day off.
I also love making connections with the women who work for House Mum. It’s beautiful to see the number of friendships that have formed because of this business. We really are a family!
Hopes and dreams: What next?
Last year, the House Mum team completed almost 3000 services, giving back each of our clients 70 hours of precious family time. But I’m not stopping there! I want to help more families, not just in Brisbane, but Australia wide.
I’m in the process of filming training videos with the plan being to be able to train new staff remotely. This means we’ll be able to start offering the House Mum service in new areas soon.
These training videos will also be the next step in offering women a business opportunity for the mums like me who want a flexible business, but may not know how to get started.
