Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
Let’s be honest, the last 2 years have not been very conducive to a suitable work/life/family balance. With the world’s longest lockdown, remote learning, working from home and a quickly growing business, we have just been treading water and trying to keep on top of everything. But to look at the positives, we are lucky that we have a business that the kids love helping out in. It is very much a family business, with our dad also working for us and our mum looking after the kids sometimes. We feel blessed that we have been able to spend so much time with our young children in these years, even in this extreme situation. We are definitely looking forward to getting a warehouse, more staff, hopefully getting our weekends back and having a bit more family time next year!
The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
With a pandemic, working from home, lockdowns and sickness, it’s been a tough 2 years. Business wise, working with family could have gone really badly, but we are both pretty forgiving and get over things easily. Our biggest challenge is that we love our business so much, it is hard to wind down and not think about it 24/7. We still haven’t figured that part out just yet.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
We love that we can be creative in our own way, but we can also get stuck in everyday tasks. We love that we can take a day off when we need to, but also we can never switch off and so never feel like we have actually had a break. We love that we can have the kids around at work, but also feel like they never get our full attention. We would never give it up for the world, but working for yourself really is the most challenging job.
Hopes and Dreams: What’s next?
We are desperate for a warehouse, more staff and to hopefully catch our breath in the new year – though we’re already booking up for January and this business is showing no signs of slowing down! We’re excited to grow and for more children to enjoy playing with our potion kits. We’re most excited for new products that we’ve been working on to be released and some other super exciting things we have up our sleeve. We have so many ideas, just not enough hours in the day!
