The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
In an increasingly modern world our mission is to safeguard the tradition of handcrafted rocking horses, while embracing the tools and platforms that help us reach new audiences. We’re constantly finding new ways to share what we do, from showcasing our work on social media to demonstrating live at wood and craft shows, where we inspire a new generation of makers.
Much of our drive comes from changing to make change; it’s about impact.
Like so many families, ours has been deeply affected by cancer. Through our business, we’ve been able to give back. One of the ways we do this is through a partnership with the charity Lasting Life. Founded by actress Susan George in memory of her late husband, actor Simon MacCorkindale, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2010. Lasting Life is different from many large charities – every single penny goes directly to helping those affected.
So far, we’ve proudly raised over £11,000 to support the charity’s vital work. As part of this ongoing commitment, we created Spirit of Lasting Life, a bespoke horse made from cherry, a tribute to love, courage and remembrance. For every one of these horses sold, a proportion of the proceeds is donated directly to the charity.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Running our own business gives us the flexibility to be there for our children and family whenever it matters most. From sports days to nativity plays, we never have to miss those special moments. The flip side is that once the children are asleep and the toys are tidied away, the laptops come back out as we catch up with our international customers. There was even a time we were known to reply to emails during midnight bottle feeds or while delivering leaflets on walks!
Hopes and dreams: What next?
As we prepare to celebrate 50 years of The Rocking Horse Shop in 2026, our plans are focused on honouring this incredible journey. We look forward to celebrating with the people who made it possible – our team, our customers, and of course, our horses.
As we prepare to celebrate our Golden Anniversary, we reflect with pride on our journey: from one man and a small idea, to a passionate team of ten and a stable of over 10,000 horses now rocking in homes worldwide.
