8 things you can do for your friend when she has a baby

Do housework or laundry
Most people don’t particularly want to be doing housework at the best of times. Having a newborn baby is definitely no exception to this. Check that it is OK for you to come around, help with dishes, laundry and general tidying to help mum relax and focus on baby life.

Take older children to school or extra activities
It’s easy for older children to feel a little left out with the arrival of a little brother or sister. Perhaps their wants are no longer being heard or met as often. By taking them to sports or other out of school activities they might otherwise be missing out on with the new baby you can help the family adjust to their new lives.

Lend or buy them a great book
In the early days there is a lot of time spent feeding baby and holding them while they sleep in your arms. How wonderful and magic! It is so hard to look away from this little Angel that you have created! Though after several days of only this, a great book is amazing. Lend your friend a book they will enjoy while stuck on the couch for so many hours.

Wait for mum to invite you to hold her baby
Don’t be offended if they don’t want you to hold their baby. The best thing for the baby is to be with its mother. It doesn’t care about anything else or anyone else. If you are really interested in the baby and its wellbeing you will accept this gracefully and without fuss. Wait for the baby to be a little older before you hold them. Everyone will be so grateful for your cooperation and thoughtfulness.

Ask what they need
Ask how you can help. Be accommodating and selfless. Do they need something for the house? Can you make life more comfortable for them? Can you get them a drink or a snack? Be the amazing friend that every new mother wishes they had!
