Documenting Precious Life Moments to Be Treasured Forever

GG Noir

A self-taught photographer, Gee Laly believes that everyone has a story to share and through her beautiful photography, she is able to tell stories that move and encourage people. Having observed the deep struggle that many women have with self-worth and body image, her mission is to make them feel comfortable in their own skin, and to change the narrative on “beauty”. At GG Noir, she is committed to capturing gorgeous images of women, newborns and families in a natural way that tells a unique story. Here Gee talks to The Natural Parent Magazine about the passion behind what she does, her biggest breakthrough, the challenges she has overcome, and her hopes and dreams for the future.

The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?

I started my portrait and photography business because I wanted to create a special gift for all women (of all ages) to enjoy and feel seen.

For much of my life, I’ve observed a recurring theme among many women around me: a deep struggle with body image and self-worth. They shy away from being in photos, held back by feelings of inadequacy-whether they’re not their ideal weight, they’re too old, too thin, the list goes on and on. I’ve seen friends struggle with anorexia as well as perimenopause and menopause. So my mission is to make women feel comfortable in their own skin and change the narrative on “beauty”. Because beauty is ageless and comes in all shapes and sizes. Every part of our story should be celebrated and documented.

The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?

I am self-taught but was fortunate to be mentored by some great industry professionals. I spent my early days working on dive boats taking underwater photos of tourists visiting the Great Barrier Reef. This was the stepping stone to destination weddings and portrait photography in the Whitsundays. The rest is history.

The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?

This year I achieved a great milestone: having my first photo exhibition.  It’s something I’ve dreamed of for years and achieving it feels surreal. Through this, I have been able to elevate my skills to the next level. Now I see things I never used to notice. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. Above all, I’m deeply grateful to my amazing tribe of women who said yes to this journey, reigniting a spark within themselves and inspiring me in the process.

I was listening to my favourite photography podcast recently. They were interviewing Ann Geddes and funnily enough, she said she’s never had an exhibition! She’s one of the most well-known baby photographers on earth – how is that even possible?!

Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?

The short answer is, I am a night owl!
