The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
My story doesn’t come without its many bumps in the road. Being diagnosed with body dysmorphia and living with what felt, and sometimes still does, like a bully on my shoulder, constantly picking away at my self-esteem: I never wanted anyone else to feel that way.
The turning point for me? I didn’t want my daughters to grow up feeling the same way. I didn’t want them to develop the bad habits that became so normal for me.
I wanted to create a space where anyone and everyone could feel respected, safe, heard and beautiful – from anywhere in the world. Active Elite is a home for women who are navigating new body norms, activity levels, or challenging their self confidence – just like me.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Ahh the pros…well whilst it doesn’t always feel like it at the moment, I know that all the blood, sweat and tears that I am putting in all goes towards creating a better quality of life for my family.
I pride myself on providing the best example for my children. Showing them that hard work, determination and consistency pays off.
I am proud of the brand that I have built. Active Elite has pushed me beyond my comfort zone both professionally and personally. I have been pushed to face my fears and be vulnerable in ways I would never consider possible.
However that self doubt is always present, especially when it comes to being present on social media. I am definitely not the type to post pictures of myself and this has been a very big contentious issue for me.
Owning and operating a business is very stressful but also rewarding at the same time. I have had failures along the way but I have also learnt many skills.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I’m excited to see what the next 12 months has to offer. Currently, I am working on a new collection that is to be released for winter. I am also hoping and working towards broadening our reach and really be in the forefront of women’s minds when they think of activewear. There is a lot more hustling to do but it will all be worth it in the end.
