The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
My biggest business challenge so far has been not taking on too much. I have had to resist the urge to expand our range of products too much or too fast and overwhelming myself. We currently have nine different flavours of Boobie Kookies, two flavours of Milky Muffins, two flavours of Blissful Boosters, as well as Dry Mixes and Non-Boobie Kookies, which doesn’t include the allergy-friendly options. We also pride ourselves on baking all orders fresh, which is sometimes harder than imaginable, however since merging our home office and residential kitchen it has become much more manageable.
For Better or Worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The best part of running my own business is flexible hours. While I dedicate full-time hours to Kym’s Boobie Kookies, I can start my day whenever I like, and I can mix up my days off so I don’t get bored, and to allow for activities with Heather. We have a very busy lifestyle, but after over two years in business, we have things pretty fine-tuned. It helps to have a supportive partner who helps every chance he gets.
I also control everything about my business. If I want to have a slower week, I adjust my marketing. If I need a break, I take it. If I have some stock to move, I control the sales and specials. If I put in the hard work, I reap the rewards. But that can also be a con of business, that we don’t get a return for each hour we dedicate to it, whereas when we have paid employment, we are entitled to compensation for hours of dedication. But, once you experience a breakthrough or change in direction, it is uplifting and motivating. Connecting with other business owners and celebrating successes together is something I recommend for everyone. Find your tribe. Embrace support. We all need it.
Hopes and Dreams: What next?
I have an exciting product that I am hoping to patent and release soon, so it is a bit hush hush for now, but there is nothing like it on the market for breastfeeding parents so I feel it will be very popular. Eventually, I aim for Kym’s Boobie Kookies to fund a Not For Profit Organisation targeted at assisting the breastfeeding community in getting the assistance they require to achieve their breastfeeding goals.
