Cut. Colour. Connect. A Unique, Welcoming & Sustainable Hairdressing Experience

The drive: What challenges have you overcome?

The biggest challenge is growing the right team. I knew that the success of the salon would depend heavily on having talented, passionate stylists who shared my vision. I took my time in hiring, making sure to find people who are not only skilled but are also excited about the opportunity to grow with the business.

Building that foundation, with a clear vision and the right people by my side, helps to set the stage for our continued growth.

For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?

Running my salon while raising a young family has both rewarding aspects and challenges.

Pros:

Flexibility and Control: Being my own boss gives me more control over my schedule, which can help in balancing time with our kids, especially during important moments or family commitments.

Role Model for my Kids: Owning the salon while raising my girls will one day show them the value of hard work, dedication, and resilience. They get to see firsthand what it means to pursue a passion and take on responsibility, which hopefully will be inspiring as they grow up!

Building Community and Connections: I’m so grateful that my loyal clients (some for over 20+ years!) are incredibly understanding of my family obligations, and my team provides me with brilliant support when I need help balancing work and home life.

Cons:

Difficulty Finding Balance: It can be challenging to balance the demands of my children with the responsibilities of owning the salon. The need to be present in both spaces can sometimes lead to feeling stretched thin or experiencing ‘mum guilt’ over missing family time.

Financial Uncertainty and Pressure: The need to sustain the business financially can be stressful, especially in this tough economic climate. This pressure can sometimes take away from family time as I work to cover what sometimes can feel like never-ending costs.

Boundary Setting: Balancing work and home can be tricky, as the line between the two can blur. It is tempting for me to address work matters during family time, especially with the nature of owning a client-focused business where clients and staff rely on you. This can make it hard to fully unplug and be present with my family at times.

Hopes and dreams: What next?

I’m hoping to continue to grow KIN HAIR by attracting clients that align with our ethos. I look forward to continuing to build a strong close knit team of skilled and passionate stylists who see the salon as a place to grow and thrive in their careers.

I hope to create an environment where staff feel valued, supported, and motivated to stay at KIN HAIR for the long term, allowing us to build strong relationships and consistent service for our clients.

While doing this, I want to continue to achieve personal balance.

My goal is for the salon to reach a point where I have even more flexibility, allowing me to continue to enjoy the balance between a business owner and a dedicated mum.
