The Drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Doubts about my decision to move my family and the pressure I put on myself to be successful and provide for my family.
The fear of not knowing whether my ideas for the business would work. Not knowing if my stock choices and levels would be right.
I am now confident with my decisions and know that the more I learn and understand the better my business will be.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The cons would be: Being responsible for everything. Knowing that even if you are not motivated, or you’re tired, you have to keep going. Having some periods of time where the store comes first – when it’s cruise boat season, opening on a Sunday and possibly longer hours during the week.
The pros definitely out way the cons for me. I have the freedom to do things my way. I am part of the community and get to meet many interesting people – both local and international.
I am able to show my children that you can succeed and reap the rewards.
I have a sense of pride that I have had a vision and been able to bring it to life. I have been able to combine my organisational and retail skills and people skills. I can honestly say that I love going into work every morning.
Hopes and Dreams: What next?
To be successful enough to employ weekend staff so that I can spend more time with my family. To update the website to help increase sales and to expand the number of products I stock that are produced and designed in New Zealand.
