With a dream to run her own business combined with her love for giving gifts to others, Kirsten Nel was inspired to create Blossom Gift Boxes, an online gifting store located in Whangaparaoa, Auckland. They curate beautifully styled gift boxes for all occasions, with a mission to create a special experience for the recipient when un-boxing to make it a lasting memory. Here Kirsten talks about starting her own business whilst maintaining a work-family balance, and her hopes and dreams for the future.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
What inspired me to start my business was my son. I was a first-time mum who wanted to spend as much time with my child as possible, but still had this dream to own my own business. I started brainstorming business ideas and thought to myself, I love giving gifts – sometimes I feel I am more excited about giving the gift than the person receiving it. So I decided to start an online gifting store and the rest is history.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
My business initially started with me playing around with logos and business names. I then started getting into contact with local businesses who had products I loved and I thought my target market would love too. I then looked at what would fit well with my branding and vision. After this, I started designing the website and I managed to do all this while still working and looking after my son.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
When I received my first order, I was beyond excited. That’s when I knew I was doing the right thing and on track for success. All that hard work is worth it.
Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
All I can say is its a lot of juggling! I don’t know how I do it. You have to be good at prioritising. I tend to spend time with my son as much as I can during the day and get my work done after he goes to bed or early mornings. This means that days can be long, but I always think of my “why” and that is my family. They are my inspiration and that keeps me going when things get tough.
