Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
I don’t, haha. I try to work only school hours, but as the business grows, I find myself up late at night and having early morning starts. Hitting the gym first thing is handy as that gets me up before everyone else, so I do a little work before the kids wake in the morning. When they are at school or after school if there’s no homework, I sometimes have to squeeze in more work and on the weekends I sometimes have to miss out on family outings because there is just too much to do.
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
I’m driven daily by the wonderful feedback that comes in: how much my product helps mums to get more sleep and how it makes their babies so happy. My biggest challenge is time management and sourcing new products. I’m in the process of changing my fabric to a more eco-friendly type. Also, the fact that we can give back to charities with some of our sales also drives me. I wish I could give more than I do, so to grow this business would be beneficial for our country.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The pros are that I can be at home and here for my kids whenever they need me. I love that I don’t have to sit in traffic. I really dreaded that with all my office jobs. One of the cons of being at home is that it’s easy to procrastinate – to do the dishes instead of sew, etc!
Hopes and dreams: What next?
My hopes and dreams would be to have a product that is eco-friendly, sustainable and to get off the machines. I’d love to grow the business enough to that I can manufacture and I’d love to have my product help mums and babies all over the world.
