The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
The biggest challenge was the transition from medical midwifery to traditional birth keeping.
I had to let go of my deep attachment to the label of “midwife” as I placed all my self-worth on it. My ego wouldn’t let me move forward for quite some time.
To help with this transition, I took the Radical Birth Keeper school with the Freebirth Society. I believe this and the support from ex NHS midwives who took the plunge before me gave me the final push to change my career and lifestyle.
For Better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The biggest pro is also the biggest con: being my own boss.
I can be very flexible and I can “birth” as many projects as I have capacity for, but this means making time for my creativity to flow working without seeing financial return for a while and always having the bigger picture in mind – the long-term goal even when nothing seems to be moving and finances are running low.
It means investing money without fear to generate more money. It means investing time and energy to create a community of women that will hopefully flourish in the years to come.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I truly believe pregnancy and motherhood are transformative and the ripples extend to our children and their future.
I hope to help women rediscover their innate wisdom and creative power so that society as a whole can start to heal.
It all starts with helping women to believe in their physiology and trust their instincts. These women will ask uncomfortable questions and will embark on their reproductive journey without fearing the whole process. They will mother according to their intuition and feel capable and valued in society as they should.
