Yin and Yang: How do you balance work and family?
As Wool Mother is still in its early stages, it is not hard to balance as we aren’t overrun with work. In terms of me balancing my online work for the business, I do try to keep it during the work days but in all reality, that never happens as social media doesn’t stop and orders come at all hours of the day or night! I feel as though when things get busier, I will have to put better boundaries in place and create more solid “work hours”, especially with the impending arrival of our new baby! Thomas is in kindy 5 days so I try to get as much done between kindy hours and then as soon as I pick him up, it’s back to Mum mode until he goes to bed for the evening. As is the case for so many parents – juggling work and business!
The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Figuring out the logistics of it all with Mum and I living so far away from each other was challenging, but we now have a great system in place which works well. I guess the constant challenge we are faced with is just getting our business out there and seen, as would be the case with many small businesses!
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
Pros are the fact we have total control over every aspect of it – creatively, marketing wise, product wise, etc., it’s all on our terms. The cons of this are the flip side. Because we do every aspect, it means we are fully accountable and if we do nothing, nothing happens, so it’s about staying motivated and getting it done. If we have a quiet week, we need to just keep moving, not give up or get down about it and keep pushing forward!
Hopes and dreams: What next?
We hope for more mothers to experience the amazing benefits New Zealand merino wool has for their breastfeeding journey! We would love to find more stockists and get Wool Mother out there. We have a few ideas for other merino wool baby/mother products so eventually we will expand our range but for now we just want to get our pads out there so more mothers can benefit from them, just like I did!
Visit the Wool Mother Maternity website to find out more and to shop their range of products. You can also follow their journey on Facebook and Instagram.
