How fish can introduce your child to responsibility and caregiving

Types of fish

One of the first decisions you will have to make when preparing to buy a fish is between saltwater and freshwater species. Saltwater aquariums require much more maintenance and experience so freshwater aquariums are recommended for beginners.

Each species of fish requires its own specific environment in which to live comfortably.

The ideal water temperature and tank size for each species vary, something one must take into consideration if you are planning to mix species within one tank.

Furthermore, many species of fish do not get along with each other. Similarly, some must be kept separate to the opposite sex of their species to avoid fighting or rapid breeding. Taking these factors into consideration, do some research and talk to someone at your local pet store before buying your fish to avoid a difficult situation that could endanger your new pet.

It’s undeniable that pets can play an integral role in childhood development with a number of benefits.

For children not yet ready to care for a guinea pig or cat, fish are a low maintenance option with a very low barrier to entry. At the simplest level, all that is required is a fishbowl and regular maintenance. Of course, some thought must be put into species and environment but with a little effort, fish can make the perfect pet to teach your child about responsibility and perhaps prepare them for more demanding pets.
