Jessica Spackman wants women to realise their incredible potential when it comes to childbirth and know that there is no single ideal birth, except one where you feel empowered and supported to follow your own birthing wisdom and intuition. At Mother Moon Hypnobirthing, she uses her vast experience to provide women with the tools to approach birth peacefully, positively, and fully prepared to face whatever turn the birthing journey takes. Jessica is a registered midwife and Hypnobirthing Australia practitioner. She strongly believes that every woman deserves to enter her labour free of fear, and feeling excited about birthing her baby. Here she shares her passion for helping women achieve a positive birth experience.
The passion: What inspired you to set up your business?
I went into midwifery straight out of high school. I knew at a young age that I wanted to work with pregnant and birthing people. This career is everything I ever wanted. But the reality I found in working in our current maternity system is that there was just not enough time or resources available to preparing parents for their birthing journey. I was working with families in labour who had limited knowledge of what was happening within their bodies, no tools to help them work with their body and baby, and feeling full of fear about birth. Labour is not the time to start learning about your options for birth. So, I researched ways I could make this much-needed preparation accessible to parents, and I found Hypnobirthing Australia. Their program aligned with my philosophy as a midwife and was so comprehensive.
Through my vast experience, skills in supporting birth physiology, and passion for teaching I have found my calling in facilitating the positive birth program. I had been teaching for 6 years before Mother Moon Hypnobirthing was launched. The birth of my very own hypnobub inspired me to start teaching hypnobirthing full time, while working toward my endorsement for private midwifery practice. I have now been teaching this amazing program full time for almost 2 years and am amazed and inspired every day by the impact it has on the birthing experience. In Australia, 1 in 3 women experience birth trauma, and I am dedicated to making every effort to change this narrative in our birth culture.
The launch: How did you start out in the beginning?
I initially started teaching Hypnobirthing to private clients on my days off-call. It was a very full-on schedule. After my baby was born, I started teaching group classes from two of our local private midwifery practices. And then the pandemic hit. My classes moved online for a time and I found myself teaching clients from across Australia. I love teaching my face-to-face groups, but it is also so awesome to share my knowledge, tools and experience anywhere in the world. I am a big believer in breaking out of the paradigm of separation of business and motherhood. Successful women CAN be both. For me the two intertwine beautifully. So, my work revolves around my why – my baby.
The innovation: What was the biggest breakthrough for you with your business?
Authenticity is my biggest goal. I always say that the right people will be drawn to you because of YOU. I teach authentically, I promote my genuine self, and I aim to share information that is realistic, evidence based and driven by passion.
I don’t try to be like any other childbirth educator. I am proud of exactly what I can offer my clients and will always aim to give them 100% of my authentic self.
