The drive: What challenges have you overcome?
Along the Ella & Maeve journey, there have of course been hurdles and set-backs. Within a short time of Ella & Maeve gaining momentum, I was offered a new job close to home which was too good to pass up. Although it was incredibly daunting starting in a new, full-time role with a 6-month-old and a small business I loved in its infancy, it provides me with the financial backing I need to see Ella & Maeve evolve and succeed. A diagnosis of glandular fever in mid-2020 was a timely reminder that I needed to slow down, accept that I can’t do it all, and ask for help. Whilst unknown at the time, that diagnosis led me to creating better work-life balance and developing critical new business relationships, which will be the key to success moving forward, particularly as our family expands later this year! Aside from personal challenges, I’ve encountered many problems searching for sustainable fabrics and fibres to create the perfect Australian-made, closed-loop system nappy.
For better or worse: What are the pros and cons of running your own business?
The creativity and freedom of having your own business is wonderful. I can set my own hours, determine how much time I’m willing to spend apart from my family and see my vision for the future come to life. The downside of course is that you can’t do it all; it’s incredibly expensive and it’s far too easy to work endlessly and stay switched on. Whilst I may sometimes be physically present with my family, I find myself constantly mulling over new ideas and creative concepts, which can be quite the distraction.
Hopes and dreams: What next?
I have so many grand plans for the evolution of Ella & Maeve, including an increased focus on sustainability, but one thing will always remain the same – my commitment to an Australian-made reusable cloth nappy and accessories.
